Connecting Purpose to Potential
Life is full of questions, but some resonate more deeply than others. Among them are three profound questions that define our journey and shape our destiny: Why me? Why here? Why now? Answering these questions connects us to our purpose and unlocks our God-given potential.
1. Why Me?
The question "Why me?" is often asked in the shadow of tragedy: illness, loss, or failure. But this same question can also be asked proactively, as a way to understand God’s unique calling on your life.
There are two types of "Why Me":
The Why Me of Tragedy, which arises from pain and despair.
The Why Me of Strategy, which leads to purpose and preparation.
When you ask the Why Me of Strategy, you discover truths about God’s perspective:
God believes in you.
God trusts you with His plan.
God sees strength where others see weakness.
The Bible is filled with examples of unlikely individuals chosen for great purposes:
Moses, with his speech impediment and lack of confidence, became a leader of God’s people (Exodus 4:10).
Saul of Tarsus, a persecutor of Christians, became the Apostle Paul, a passionate advocate for the gospel (1 Corinthians 15:9; 1 Timothy 1:15).
Rahab, a prostitute, was included in the lineage of Jesus because of her faith (Matthew 1:5).
God's choices may not always make sense to us, but His plans are perfect.
2. Why Here?
It’s natural to seek comfort and stability, but God often places us in challenging or unfamiliar situations to shape us for what’s next.
Consider Isaac, who obeyed God’s command to stay in a land plagued by famine (Genesis 26:1–3), and Lot, who chose a comfortable yet destructive path that ultimately led him to a cave (Genesis 19:30).
The place you are in right now is not an obstacle—it’s an opportunity. It’s the place where God is refining you, testing your faith, and preparing you for your next season.
3. Why Now?
Opportunities don’t always come at convenient times. God’s timing often challenges our comfort zones.
Joseph and Mary acted immediately when God instructed them to flee to Egypt with baby Jesus (Matthew 2:13–14). They didn’t delay, knowing that timing was crucial.
Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” Acting promptly on God’s direction ensures we don’t miss out on His plans.
Unlocking Your Potential
To connect purpose to potential:
Identify Your "Why": Reflect on your gifts and how they can glorify God.
Stay Focused on Your "Why": Resist distractions and press toward your goals (Philippians 3:14).
Take Action: Step out in faith, trusting that God equips those He calls.
Your “Why Power” is the key to living a life of impact. Embrace it today!
